What Ashton Kutcher Didn’t Tell You…
I love Twitter. I love the fact that it’s instant. I love meeting new people on it. I love learning from the people I meet and I love the fact that it’s an amazing networking tool.
I simply love Twitter.
But let me tell you something[private_free] [firstname][/private_free]…
Something has been bugging me about it for a while now.
If you’re used to running your own blog or website you’ll know that every post or every article you write has a permanent home. It’s there for good, or at least until you decide to delete it. Plus, all of the content you produce is indexed by the search engines and can be found almost immediately and long into the future. People then link to your content (if it’s worthy of it, of course), more search engines pick up on it and it’s got a way of promoting itself and gathering steam as it does it.
However, with Twitter it’s completely different. You send out a tweet and in the blink of an eye it’s gone. Okay, your tweets are still available via the search feature and through some API-driven apps, but on the whole they’re gone as soon as you hit the send button. That simply doesn’t sit well with me – I think it’s a waste of good content!
So, I started looking around for ways to replicate the kind of work I do on my blogs and websites, but with the messages I send out on Twitter instead and I’ve now found two VERY cool ways of doing it…
This is so damn simple that I can’t believe I didn’t think of it before. To be honest, I didn’t even know if it would work or not, but it definitely does work and it means that every single message you post on Twitter is available on Technorati, your messages are syndicated across thousands of other websites and every word you type is instantly available to a whole new audience of, literally, millions of users. Now, how cool is that? Yeah, it impressed me too! :)
All you need to do is this:
- Open a new account, or login to your existing account, on Technorati.
- Click on the Blogs tab, then My Blogs, and click on the “Claim a new blog” link.
- Enter the URL from your Twitter profile page (for example: http://twitter.com/TheAffiliateGuy).
- Post the code they tell you to place on your site as a new Twitter message (delete it after claiming).
- Click the claim button and fill in your profile information.
That’s all there is to it…. you’re now marketing yourself to a brand new audience with millions of users!
This second idea won’t be so new to a lot of you, but if you’re a Wordpress user (and why on earth wouldn’t you be???) and you also use Twitter (again, why on earth wouldn’t you be???) then you should make use of this free plugin to create an archive post of your tweets every day, because it’s a simple way to archive the hard work you’re putting in on Twitter and to automatically create fresh content for your website into the bargain!
This is all you need to do:
- Download Alex King’s excellent Twitter Tools plugin.
- Upload it to the wp-content/plugins directory on your server.
- Go to the Plugins section of your WP admin area and activate the plugin.
- Click on the Settings link in the left menu and you’ll see the new Twitter Tools option.
- Choose the options that suit you best and you’re all set.
There you go[private_free] [firstname][/private_free]…
Now you know how to maximize your content AND how to reach MILLIONS of new Internet users!
…and it will take you all of, well, 10 minutes to do.
Even Ashton Kutcher couldn’t teach you how to do THAT on Twitter… ;-)

Just followed your instructions and successfully claimed my twitter account on Technorati. Now to sit back and see what happens. Thanks for the hot tip :)
Thanks Mike! It was rather easy wasn’t it? :-)
~ Paul
Just claimed my twitter account on technorati as you suggested – great! thanks a lot!
You’re welcome Loris! :)
Hello… having trouble trying to claim it. I’m copying and pasting the code that they give me right into my twitter update but it’s not recognizing it.
Any help would be greatly appreciated… thanks!
I just copied the full html code they give you into Twitter and posted it as a new tweet Daryl. Then went to claim it, got the approval message and then deleted the tweet.
Weird, it worked this time…. Got it to work, thanks Paul!
Great, good stuff Daryl!
Using Technorati isnt working. I am getting the following message
The time it is taking for our systems to claim your blog has exceeded our timeout threshold of 5 minutes
This may mean there is a current backlog of claims or issues in Technorati’s back-end systems. Please try your claim again later. If this problem persists for you, please contact support and supply the following information:
* The following error code: 603
* Account Name
* Blog URL
I’d just do what they say and try again in a little while Rahul… it seems to have been working fine for a lot of others today, so it’s maybe just a temporary glitch at Technorati’s end.
~ Paul
Ok, i will try after some time
I just claimed mine as well…
This is great because the possibilities it opens are very intriguing
1) you gain authority when other blogs mention your name – my twitter name, @jdvarlaro, was on a couple of websites, so it appeared on my technorati page
2) it opens the door to ‘peer reviewed’ twitter users. I think this could begin to close the door on a lot of those self-proclaimed experts who just spam all day. And this is a better, more democratic method as opposed to the new fade of posting your ‘unfollowed’ list.
Thanks for your feedback John.
I agree with you 100%. I only thought of this last night and I honestly couldn’t tell you what kind of results to expect from it, but like you say it’s helping you to gain authority and surely having updates firing into Technorati and being syndicated by other websites all day long can’t be a bad thing :)
I just do it, thank
Its not working for me. it says..
The URL you provided is invalid. Please check the URL and try again.
Is it that this process is not working any more or ??
please help me…
I’m not too sure to be honest. I tried your URL and got the same message. Perhaps someone else could double-check? It might also be worth waiting an hour or two and trying it again.
Wow, you are right it works. Now what? LOL
Perhaps we can have some sort of dialogue regarding the benefits of this technique.
Anyway good stuff
.Mike
Hi Paul, Great idea.
I’ve attempted as well, however Technorati appears now not to be accepting Twitter.com urls… I wonder if they’ve got wise to this and are excluding now??
I did a search on Technorati for some of your recent twitter posts to check that way if it was working, however couldn’t find any results. Have you yet seen any listings/examples of it working? If so can you post an example?
Thanks,
Belinda
Hi Belinda,
You’re the second person to say this since last night, so it is possible that they aren’t allowing Twitter pages now. I can’t really see why they wouldn’t though, because although the messages are a lot shorter on T it’s still blogging of sorts, albeit micro-blogging, so you would think that would be OK. Not sure to be honest.
It definitely has been working…
http://technorati.com/blogs/twitter.com%2FTheAffiliateGuy
Maybe try it again tomorrow and if you can please post an update.
Many thanks,
~ Paul
I found that if you go in and make your twitter blog one of your favorites, it will take you to your favorites page and list every update you have one twitter. That alone shows me it’s working.
I average about 30 updates a day, in all of my updates were posted on Technorati. So if you’re having trouble finding out where your updates are, just go in and make it a favorite and magically all of your updates will appear.
Mmm, I just did this Mike and it only updated the posts up to 3 days ago, which – funnily enough – was the exact day I listed my account on there and posted this article.
We might need to keep an eye on this over the next couple of days. Maybe blasting Twitter with news of how to list your T account on Technorati wasn’t such a good idea… :)
Belinda

good idea… and yes putting something like this on twitter could be a death sentence.
Let’s watch and see.
Hi Paul – I’m getting the same invalid URL message others have reported. Rats! I’ll try later. Thanks for the great tips and thanks again for following me on Twitter! @lisbethtanz
Warmly,
Lis
Hi Lis,
I’m not sure if this is because they’re no longer allowing Twitter accounts, or if their claim blog feature is having problems. I just tried to claim a normal blog and it wouldn’t let me do that either, so it’s possible it is that.
I’ll try it later on today too…
~ Paul
Thanks for the follow and for sending me the link! working on claiming mine now ;)
I had no problem claiming my Twitter account over on Technorati when you first posted this article Paul, and after checking out the site today, it would seem they are doing scheduled mainttenance or at least were doing some! – You can get the latest up-to-date information from their blog if you visit that link though!
So it would appear that Technorati STILL allow it! :D
Ah, good stuff Mark – thanks for the info!
I’ve had problems claiming blogs on Technorati before too actually. I always seem to have problems with magazine type blog designs for some reason – who knows why.
Just tried this – twice – and the process did work…except that it claimed two blogs that aren’t mine!
Please see Mark’s comments above about this Lisa. I’d hold off until there’s an updated service message from Technorati about it, because the claiming procedure has been pretty much down since Friday.
Just tired it and got error message. When back in a few minutes later to look at it and all my last posts were listed from @JamesRivers
I will keep you posted as to how well this works per your post
Warm regards,
James Rivers
Twitter Power Team
There still seems to be problems with Technorati’s blog claim feature James – it’s been ongoing since last Friday now. It’s affecting normal blogs too, so hopefully they’ll have it sorted out soon.
I’ve signed up for your Twitter Power System BTW… look forward to hearing more!
~ Paul
Worked perfectly for me :)
I’ve already found some posts on Technorati where I was mentioned and am thrilled with what I’m finding – as there is very good information with lots more Twitterers to follow.
Thanks so much.
That’s cool… thanks for letting me know Heather.
Three individual people told me it worked for them yesterday, so I guess Technorati have resolved whatever problems they were having.
I’m having trouble getting my photo to upload on Technorati. My screen goes to an cascaded sheet.
Sorry, can’t really help with that one Darron. I’m sure I just uploaded a 90*90 sized pic and it went through first time. Maybe check the dimensions as that could cause a problem.
Darron, I just put a new forum online this morning…
http://www.affiliatetraining.com/forum/
As you can see, zero posts so far :-), but if you have any questions about affiliate type stuff feel free to ask there.
~ Paul
Thanks for tip, I’ll be sure to check it out as soon as I have a moment. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks Jack! Great website and love your domain name… ;-)
Claim process didn’t’ work for the longest time in Firefox this morning… tried once in IE, worked like a charm… then could not compelte claim via IE, queued up Firefox for that and it worked.
Just FYI.
Great idea here, and thank for the post!!!
Alex
I honestly don’t know what to make of Technorati Alex… great service, but jeez they seem to have some problems with their blog claiming process. I can’t even claim this site either – it just keeps saying that it isn’t recognized or something. Grrr.
I shall try using a different browser too – thanks for the tip! :-)
~ Paul
I can’t make it work either.
It wont accept twiter.com/www_scunt_co_uk but it will accept http://www.twitter.com/www_scunt_co_uk.
Not sure why the www. would help – but it still wont accept that the code is there.
frustrating
Are you posting the code it tells you to place on your website in a tweet? You need to do that, post it, then claim your “blog”. When you get the confirmation message then you can just delete the tweet.
~ Paul
Hi Paul,
Thanks for the tips on claiming Twitter accounts. You’re right, with all the work you put into Twitter, you should be getting some SERP recognition too.
Just claimed mine and it’s all good.
I had a lot of trouble claiming my blog initially, and couldn’t get any help from Technorati by submitting support tickets, so I went to the support forum and asked if “anyone” knew how to claim my blog, and stated that I couldn’t get a response from Technorati support. Within 20 minutes they responded and told me what was going wrong. IMO the only way to get them to respond in a timely manner is to call them out in their support forum so that they have to respond or they look bad.
Best of luck claiming this blog – nice looking layout too!
Best Regards, Chris
Hi Chris,
Yeah, I’ve come to realize that about their support too. I tried a couple of times in the last week, but didn’t get a response. Feedburner and services like that are the same. They’re free services, who – the two of those anyway – just happen to be the leaders in their field and the FAQs on their site are often about the best support you’ll get. What can you do? They’re great in a lot of other ways.
Google is the same come to think of it. That’s like calling one of those call centers who make you press about twenty buttons to get through to someone…. only with Google you start on their website, work your way through loads of FAQs, then try to call them and you still need to press another twenty buttons before you can speak to someone. And you know what they tell you to do? Yep….. “look at the FAQs!”.
I sound like a grumpy old man now, don’t I? I really should stop that :-)
~ Paul
Google has SUPPORT??? LOL A little late for this comment but I just joined here so hello everyone
Great tip, but I’ve literally been trying this all day without success. Early when they were doing maintenance I got some time-out errors, but not it’s always “invalid URL”. I’ve tried it with IE and FF but not once has it accepted the Twitter URL. :(
